BIOGRAPHY: "While Larkin was away fighting for the South during the Civil War, the Union soldiers again came to the Nance home near Dalton, GA, looking for food. Everything they owned had been burned, destroyed, or stolen, except for one old hog which had somehow managed to elude the soldiers. As they approached, Ann Nance told the children to take the hog down into the root cellar and try to keep it quiet. The hog was found and dragged up the steps to be carried away. Ann jumped astride the hog and held on for dear life. She told the soldiers they would have to kill her first if they took her hog... they left the hog. Ann was part Cherokee and must have been very brave and tough." Children were:
