In the early 19th centry four out of five Harwell brothers, Buckner,
Harbard, Raleigh, and Samuel, sons of Samuel Harwell, Sr. !716-1793),
Revelutionary war patriot from Virginia, and his wife Abigail, also a
native of Virginia, emigrated to giles County.

Accounts of the progeny of brothers Buckner and Harbard are chronicled in
Vol. III, Mos. 3 and 4 respectively of the Giles County Historical
Society Bulletin. This Bulletin presents an account of the progeny of
the third brother Raleigh.
Raleigh Harwell, listed in Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the
American Revolution buried Tenn. Ref, Vol. 3, Tn DAR Gen. records
1972-1973,was born 27 May, 1762 in Brunswick Co., Va. the fifth son and


and seventh child of Samuel and Abegail Harwell. At 28 Raleigh Harwell
was married on 29 Nov, 1790 in lincoln Co., N. C. to Cara Featherstone b.
18 Aug 1773, the daughter of Richard Featherstone whose wife and Sara's


mother was a probably a Brown prior to their marriage. The union of
Raleigh and Sara Featherstone Harwellproduced a total of thirteen
siblings: eight males and five females, ten born in Lincoln Co., N. C.
and three born in Giles County, Tennesse.
Although Raleigh was a land owner in N. C., he obviously felt compelled


to join his brothers Buckner and Harbard in Tennesse. In 1813, Raleigh,


Sara, and their children moved to Giles County.
" Rolly" Harwell and his family attended camp meetings at Mount Pisgah.


He was an old fashioned Methodist Class leader, wore a straight breast
coat and was known as a Methodist by his garb. All the familybecame
religious and three sons entered the ministry. " From A History of Mt.

In June 1818 Raleigh purchased ( Deed Book C, pages284-285) and occupied
land in the second district on the main east fork of Buchanan Creek in
eastern Giles Co., where he and his wife resided until their deaths. He


died 7 Aug 1836 and Cara died 15 Sept 1859. Both along with many of their
decendants are buried on this property in what today is know as the
Harwekll - Marks cemetery and is property owned by their great- great
granddaughter Mrs. Doris Burch Hughey. Raleigh HARWELL and Cara FEATHERSTONE were married on 29 Nov 1790 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.22

111. Cara FEATHERSTONE22 was born on 18 Aug 1773 in Virginia.22 She died on 15 Sep 1859 in Giles County, North Carolina.22 Reference:

In the early 19th centry four out of five Harwell brothers, Buckner,
Harbard, Raleigh, and Samuel ( Frances the fifth son did not come), sons
of Samuel Harwell, Sr ( 1716 - 1793) , Revolutionary War patriot from
Virginia, and his wife Abigail, also a native Virginian, emigrated to
Lincoln County, North Carolina.
Accounts of the progeny of brothers Buckner and Harbard are chronicled in
Vol.III, Mos. 3 and 4 respectively of the Giles County Historical
Society Bulletin. This Bulletin presents an account of the progeny of
the third brother Raleigh.

Rev. Logan D Harwell joined the Tn. Conference in 1841 with a class of
seventeen. He traveled the Richland Circuit in 1843, traveled eight years
and served as a local preacher the remainder of his life.

Harwell were reared by Narazza and Logan D Harwell.
