on 29 Sep 1863 in Zolynia, Galizien Kroenlande, Poland. He died on
7 Jul 1933 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was buried in St
Adalbert Cemetery, Cook County, Illinois. BURIAL: From Stephen Szpila:
He was buried in a paupers grave at St Adelbert's during the depression never
to be recovered because of the way the records where recorded back then. It was
speculation where he was at in a certain section of the cemetery until the middle
to late 1960's when they converted that area for grave site plots. He was never
recovered.
BIRTH: From Stephen Szpila: Grandpa was from LEGNICA, Poland which is located
in the south eastern part of the country. During the 1800's Poland was occupied
by three counties. Eastern part of today's Poland was controlled by Germany and
the Germans would not allow the Poles talk there native language. They had to
talk German and many Poles called them KASHUBS (This phonetically written)( I
don't know what it means) because many never new or could speak their native
language. The area grandpa was from was controlled by the Austrian government.
That area was noted for being a wooded or forrest area. He left Poland and he
left his family.

have been changed.
OCCUPATION: From Stephen Szpila: My grandpa supposedly was a lumberjack before
he came to Chicago. Grandpa, after arriving, worked in a foundry plant and was
burned by hot molten metal early during his employment. This made him a heavy
drinker to numb the pains. Possibly shortening his life.
BIOGRAPHY: 1900 Cook County, IL Census shows that he could read, write, and spoke
English.
CENSUS: The 1900 Census lists him and his parents from the Austrian side of Poland,
but the 1910 Census lists them as being from the Russian side.1920 Census goes
back to the Austrian side.
CENSUS: 1910 Census lists a cousin named Stefan Szpila who was 19 yrs old living
with the family. Stefan arrived in the states in 1908,only spoke Polish was currently
an alien, and worked as a helper in a machine shop.
CENSUS: 1920 Census shows a lodger by the name of Cecilia Kowaleska? who was
18,single, could read and write, was born in IL., her parents were both from
Poland (Russ), and she worked in a tailor shop.
IMMIGRATION: 1910 Cook County, IL. Census shows him to have immigrated in 1890.
It also appears that he has started the process of naturalization. 1920 Census
shows him to have immigrated in 1895 and have become a citizen in 1910. | | ii. | Andreas? SZPILA

"Zofja" SZPILA died on 28 Mar 1948 in Cook County, Illinois.
Obituary from the Dziennik Chicagoski Newspaper:
To all relatives and acquaintances we report the sad news that our most beloved
sister and aunt, the late Zofia Gieryntasiewicz (nee SZPILA) member of "Tow."
St. Teresa,"gr. 34 Z.P. w A.", after a short illness, adjusted Blessed
Sacraments "pozegnaia sie z tym swiatem", on 20 March, 1948, morning,
at middle age, residing at 2004 W. Grand Ave.
The funeral will be on Wednesday, 24 March, at 9:30 AM, from "zakiadu
pogrzebowego pnr." 2129 Webster Ave. to the church of St. Hedwig, and from
there to St. Adelbert's Cemetery on family plot.
To this sad ceremony we invite all relatives and friends, we, burdened with
deep grief:
Martin, brother; Stanislawa Szpila, niece (sister's daughter); along with
the whole family.

recently learned) she took her mother's maiden name in becoming a nun. Any input
