Michael "Mikal/Michal" SZPILA was born on 29 Sep 1863 in Zolynia, Galizien Kroenlande, Poland. He died on 7 Jul 1933 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was buried in St Adalbert Cemetery, Cook County, Illinois. BURIAL: From Stephen Szpila: He was buried in a paupers grave at St Adelbert's during the depression never to be recovered because of the way the records where recorded back then. It was speculation where he was at in a certain section of the cemetery until the middle to late 1960's when they converted that area for grave site plots. He was never recovered.

BIRTH: From Stephen Szpila: Grandpa was from LEGNICA, Poland which is located in the south eastern part of the country. During the 1800's Poland was occupied by three counties. Eastern part of today's Poland was controlled by Germany and the Germans would not allow the Poles talk there native language. They had to talk German and many Poles called them KASHUBS (This phonetically written)( I don't know what it means) because many never new or could speak their native language. The area grandpa was from was controlled by the Austrian government. That area was noted for being a wooded or forrest area. He left Poland and he left his family.
Update 10 Mar 2004 on Stephen Szpila's RootsWeb tree:Birth/Death dates and birthplace have been changed.

OCCUPATION: From Stephen Szpila: My grandpa supposedly was a lumberjack before he came to Chicago. Grandpa, after arriving, worked in a foundry plant and was burned by hot molten metal early during his employment. This made him a heavy drinker to numb the pains. Possibly shortening his life.

BIOGRAPHY: 1900 Cook County, IL Census shows that he could read, write, and spoke English.

CENSUS: The 1900 Census lists him and his parents from the Austrian side of Poland, but the 1910 Census lists them as being from the Russian side.1920 Census goes back to the Austrian side.
