7168. Edward MEWES was born about 1589 in England. He died on 12 Mar 1640 in Souldrop, Bedfordshire, England. Letter from Bob Muse dated 10 Dec 1997 asking for confirmation of thedata on Edward Mewes found on-line:
"Yes, I do believe that Edward Mewes b. ca 1589 was the father ofJohn Mewes christened 13 October 1633 in Souldrop, Bedfordshire,England. (This event, names, and dates are listed on the BedfordshireParish Records). John Muse name on the early records of RappahannockCounty VA is spelled Mewes. Later documents there and in Richmond andWestmoreland Counties have spellings of Mews, Mewse, and Muse. On 50October 1715 (Richmond Co. VA, Miscellaneous Records and DepositionsBook, p. 93) lists a 'Deposition of John Mews and William Lewis'referencing 'John Mews aged eighty two years.' This establishesJohn's birthdate as 1633. He acquired his first land in 1668 when allresidents of Virginia were from England. I searched all availableParish Records of England and found only one John Mewes (or variantspellings) as born in 1633 in all of England. This is my reasoningfor believing John's father was Edward. *No documentation has beenfound to prove or disprove this.* I have been to London PublichRecord Office and Society of Genealogists twice and the Salt LakeCity, Utah, library four times and have found no other data. Thereare two other remote possible connections for John to England, butthey are not as conclusive as the connection that I just cited.
